Measurement Guide

Measurement Guide

Almost every return we see could have been avoided with a tape measure. Dimensions are listed on every product page; this page explains what to measure before you order.

Rugs and mats

Measure the floor area you want covered, not the room. For a rug in a living room, the usual rule is that the front legs of the sofa should sit on it — a rug that floats in the middle with everything off it makes a room look smaller, not larger.

  • Bedside: measure from the bed frame outward to where your feet land.
  • Bathroom: measure the clear floor, and check the door swings over the mat thickness.
  • Between sizes: take the larger one. Undersized is the more common regret.

Throws and blankets

For a sofa, measure the seat width and add roughly 40–60cm so the throw drapes rather than perches. For a bed, measure the mattress width and add the drop you want on each side.

  • Single bed: around 150 × 200cm covers the top with a modest drop.
  • Double: around 200 × 230cm.
  • Sofa throw: 130 × 170cm suits a two-seater; larger for a corner unit.

Sofa and cushion covers

Measure the seat from outer arm to outer arm, along the back. This is the measurement covers are sold against — not the overall length of the sofa including the arms flaring outward. For cushion covers, measure the cushion pad itself, and take the cover in the same size rather than one up; a slightly snug cover looks fuller and better.

Bedding

UK bed sizes are standard, so match the mattress rather than the frame: Single 90 × 190cm, Double 135 × 190cm, King 150 × 200cm, Super King 180 × 200cm. For fitted sheets and protectors, check the mattress depth as well — a deep mattress needs a deeper skirt.

Lighting

For a table lamp, a rough guide is that the shade should be no wider than the surface it stands on, and the bottom of the shade around eye level when you are seated. Check the bulb fitting and whether a bulb is included; both are listed on the product page.

How to measure

  • Use a tape, not a phone app. Laser and AR measurements are close, not exact.
  • Measure twice, in the same units. Mixing centimetres and inches mid-calculation is the single most common error.
  • Mark it out. For anything large, put masking tape on the floor at the dimensions first. It takes two minutes and it settles most decisions.
